𝓔𝓿𝓪𝓟𝓮𝓮𝓵@𝓰𝓶𝓪𝓲𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝓶Long long ago, in the pre-Ozempic 80s, when dieting was a national sport and I one of its champions, I found myself avoiding lunch at a wondrous store where unsold couture went to chill after the hot winter shopping season. I was browsing skinny-people clothes, when I came upon a Venus de Milo look alike mannequin wearing a dress that took my breath away. It was a perfect dress for success that went effortlessly anywhere, from work to dinner to the opera; a dress like none I had ever owned, a real Hollywood dress. It was the size of my arm, but stunning. To add insult to indignity, Her Serene Highness of fashion, Princess Diane von Furstenberg, its mama, had named it Twiggy. I felt like Audrey Hepburn making nose prints outside Tiffany’s.My wardrobe at the time was bursting with muumuus. No dictionary ever listed the ubiquitous muumuu. No clothing store stocked it. Designers poo-pooed it. “What’s that,” they’d ask. “Some kind of tutu?” Rhyming opportunity notwithstanding, the muumuu was not a tutu, be that bishop or ballerina. In fact, it was the philosophical opposite of it. One revealed, the other concealed. Flared or tent-shaped dresses, loose tunics jackets or vests, extra loose hoodies capes or ponchos, even ancient Greek togas – all just muumuus by another name. Billions of dollars’ worth of this evergreen of fashion sold every year, because weight fighting women always felt safe in a muumuu. But my heart was set on the Twiggy.I needed to talk to someone, so I called my colleague Molly. “I found a dress … I have to have it.” “What kind of dress,” asked Molly. “The perfect dress for the wrap party.” “Wrap party? What’s the big deal?” “It’s my first one. It’s at Spago’s.” “Spago Shmago girl. You’re a television network exec now, you’ll go to a dozen wrap parties every spring. No big whoop. Did you buy the dress?” She had me there, of course. “No. It’s a bit small.” “Tell the truth. How small?” “Very. Four sizes.” That cracked her up: “And about five weeks to get into it, eh!!!” “Thirty-seven days. I can do it. Look, I’m still new in this country, in this job. It would make me feel like I belong, like I’m not fresh off the boat anymore.” “Belong where? In the nuthouse? You’re not rich enough to buy expensive dresses you’ll never wear. What are you going to do with it – frame it? You’re so out of touch with reality, you’re gonna’ die alone. The community emptied 670,136 pounds of unneeded medications from their medicine cabinets.
