The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that 6.7 million Americans are living with dementia and this number is anticipated to continue to grow. Dementia disproportionately impacts women, with two-thirds of people with dementia being women, and more than 60 percent of Alzheimer's and dementia caregivers being women. Summa Senior Services, in partnership with the Ohio Council for Cognitive Health, is providing Dementia Friends training to office staff of outpatient medical offices across Summa Health. This hour-long training is helping educate primary care and specialty medical offices regarding dementia, since many of these offices interact with people living with dementia and their families. Through these training sessions, we are creating Dementia Friends throughout the system.#DementiaFriends #AlzheimersAwareness

Some great insight into the forces behind the new GUIDE Model from CMS. This exploration of the Alzheimer's and Dementia Care (ADC) Program developed at UCLA validates the tenets of the GUIDE Model - care that supports the patient/caregiver dyad, co-management between dementia care and primary care or other specialists, and partnerships between community-based organizations and providers. This is a model of care that all who care for dementia patients should be embracing. 🔍Exploring Caregivers' Perceptions on Dementia : In Malhotra and Balasubramanian (2023) study with 215 caregivers for loved ones with severe dementia, only 26% initially recognized their care recipients' dementia as terminal conditions. Over time, perceptions evolved, shaped by the individual's age and health. Encouragingly, caregivers engaging in regular goals of care discussions with healthcare professionals showed a more accurate understanding. Important new paper led by Elan Guterman found that people with dementia randomized to interdisciplinary, coordinated care models had a ~$6300 reduction in cost per person per year compared to those in standard of care. Effect sizes were greatest for those with moderate to severe disease, at least 1 ED visit, and caregivers with symptoms of depression. These care models improve patient quality of life and caregiver burden AND reduce cost. Fantastic evidence for how to build and sustain #BetterDementiaCare
