There are a few ways to cheese the flagship, but instead, I'm going to recommend fire beam. Hacking + fire beam is goat. You can even technically kill drone ships with it by causing a double fire that spreads before it goes out. It'll chip 1 bar at a time

The second phase with the million drones shooting you is what I usually die to

4 shields and 40% evade is usually enough to withstand the drone power surge without cloaking.

I'd argue the single most important upgrade is boarding. Boarding is what makes beating the game consistently possible.
Funny thing is that I've beaten the game on Hard but I didn't get an overall high score for doing it.

I can do without boarding, it's difficult to build on some ships anyway. Hacking though is hard to do without.

Hacking is pretty meh. It's useless the moment an opponent has a defense drone, but boarding is always viable.

Flagship normal didn't seem too different from easy. It's the rest of the run that's tough.
Not sure if I want to try it on hard yet since my flagship strats all rely on keeping the one laser guy alive to not activate the auto repair.

you can still keep a guy alive but it requires finessing. as long as rockets are offline in phase 1, you can afford to frick with the enemy crew as much as you can.
you just gotta build for that strategy a but before you get there, like getting hacking to cut them off from medbay or something

What’s the lore reason humans learn 15% faster than other races? The game tries to makes us think that humans are boring, conmon, and primitive. Yet they’re the largest faction and learn faster than even the technology races.

it wasn't in the base game so there is none. Originally humans had no ability which meant they were strictly worse than slugs. Even with the buff they're still the worst race to have on your ship.

the game is too rng dependent for the length of the runs

to even make it to the last fight you have to get really lucky with your encounters, crew, shop options, and tons of other things

and the combat is easily 50% luck. even with perfect play, you can’t out-skill your weapons missing 4 times in a row or your ship not evading a series of hits. it’s just not fun to lose to a dice-roll over and over, so people (like me) put it down after 60 hours of bad runs

Pro Tip. If you set the very tip of the Glaive beam to the edge of a room, it'll take off the Zoltan shields first and then still hit the room for 2 damage.

I'm honestly not happy about the start. I don't care about damage (1 hp is just as alive as 30hp) but you want more encounters to get scrap and there just weren't that many.

I'd agree to that if you could take on the boss with base Kestrol, no upgrades.
But you can't. You have to balance upgrading with getting fricked, while hoping that you can get a weapon worth a sh*t, but still maintaining enough scrap to get it.

there's people with 95% winrate anon, while you can't beat it with the base kestrel you CAN beat 95% of the runs
you don't beat 95% of the runs because you're not good enough at the game, but that's not the game's fault

the chance of never getting a decent weapon is incredibly low, and the base kestrel actively starts you out with one of the best weapons in the game already (Burst Laser II)
and yes, if you ever ran across a good weapon but couldn't buy it that is a failure on your part, you didn't manage your scrap well enough, you let the game soften you up

It's not even about softening you up. You can run from most encounters, rush the exit, you can play it a safe, not take risks but as a result you'll have a weaker ship. But you'll get bodied by the Flagship if you do that. It's just that simple.

I'd agree to that if you could take on the boss with base Kestrol, no upgrades.
But you can't. You have to balance upgrading with getting fricked, while hoping that you can get a weapon worth a sh*t, but still maintaining enough scrap to get it.

That's the point. If you try too hard to avoid getting fricked in sectors 1-7 you'll get fricked by the flagship. Every cavity search you take before the flagship is one less prolapse you'll have in the future.

What it does is balance out the game a bit.
Instead of being just totally screwed by taking a chance on a RNG roll, you can recover with time.
The main issue with the game is how tight it is. Either you've got yourself a run in three sectors, or you restart.
There are no real incentives to keep trying different things if you just get totally blasted on merely ONE encounter or dialog selection. It forces you to use a wiki that way instead of working things out for yourself.

I beat it a long time ago, multiple times too, but only about 1/5 of runs were successful even with the unlocked ships (I wasn't able to unlock all of them). Hardest part going into the final boss fight is making sure that you weren't already fricked by RNG from the previous rooms. This is one rogue-like where it's more luck than skill.
