Why are libraries getting rid of OverDrive? ›

Discontinuing the OverDrive app allows our development teams to focus their efforts on Libby. We also want to make it as easy a possible to promote your digital library to your users. Having one app simplifies how you train your users, answer questions, and stay up to date with changes.

Libby is the newer library reading app by OverDrive, loved by millions of readers worldwide!

If you use one iOS or Android device to browse, download, and read or listen to digital books, we recommend trying Libby. It's a great one-device experience. If you like to read books on many devices, or prefer to browse for new titles on your computer, stick with the OverDrive app for now.

Libby is built by OverDrive, who also developed the legacy OverDrive app. Libby features the same free digital content from your library that you may have enjoyed in the OverDrive app. However, Libby was designed to make finding, borrowing, and enjoying free digital titles easier than ever.

Yes, your current loans and holds from the OverDrive app will be added to Libby as soon as you add your library card. Note: Reading progress and bookmarks from the OverDrive app won't sync to Libby when you switch.

For some users, Hoopla can feel like a step-up from Libby. This is because users can borrow more varieties of materials, and they can even stream television shows and movies from different devices like a smart TV.

As of May 1, 2023, the OverDrive app will be discontinued.

For patrons who use the legacy OverDrive app on their desktop computer to download eAudiobooks and transfer them to MP3 players; this software will remain for those who have already downloaded it and are using it.

Even if you create an OverDrive account, you'll still need a library card to sign into your library and borrow digital titles. Note: You don't need an OverDrive account to use Libby.

The OverDrive app will be discontinued on May 1, 2023. You can continue to use the OverDrive app up until that date, but I recommend downloading Libby now to begin to familiarize yourself with navigation and the borrowing process as soon as you can. You can even use both apps simultaneously.

Can I use Libby on my Kindle? ›

You can read most Libby books on a Kindle ereader (available in the U.S. only). Note: If you're using a Fire tablet, we recommend installing and reading with Libby. Tap loans at the top of the screen. Tap Kindle.

Library cards are valid for a two-year period, and must be renewed in person at any open library location. Visit the library within 30 days of expiration with ID and proof of local address to verify your account.

OverDrive has announced that they are no longer supporting the OverDrive app and library patrons should make the switch to the Libby app. The Overdrive app, used on iOS, Android and some Windows devices, will no longer be available or supported beginning on May 1^st.

If you still can't find your library's OverDrive collection, contact your library and ask them how to access the collection.
